BIRTHDAY BREWS IN BARÇA

MONDAY OCTOBER 21, 2024

LAS RAMBLAS

This is the principal thoroughfare in Barcelona and a much-loved pedestrian path for locals and visitors alike. Along the 1.2-kilometer tree-lined street are found many of the city’s most important historical buildings, and just off Las Ramblas is the famous main outdoor market La Boqueria. The road is also the strict boundary separating the historical, frequently visited districts Gótico and Raval.

La Boqueria

MERCADO DE LA BOQUERIA

The most famous of the old outdoor markets in Barcelona, the Boqueria sits smack alongside the most heavily traveled section of Las Ramblas, making it an obvious destination for visitors to view and sample a very colorful array of local delicacies. Its characterful tapas bars are world-renowned, and the lively neighborhood surrounding the market is teeming with other dining and drinking options of all kinds.

What's on tap at Kaelderkold?

KÆLDERKOLD

With its perfect location in the Gótico quarter just off the busiest portion of Las Ramblas and featuring 17 taps from sister / brewpub Ølgod and fellow local craft brewers, Kælderkold is one of Catalonia’s top beer destinations. Being a quintessential Barcelona bar, it specializes as well in classic and local cocktails and wines while offering the type of cool but fun and edgy atmosphere that the city is known for. Classic and simple tapas round out the experience at this early-to-late beer joint.

BREWPUB LE SEC

This extremely tiny, well-established and atmospheric neighborhood brewery tap is set in a small side street outside the central touristy area of the city. Female owned and operated, Le Sec produces supremely drinkable and well-made ales and lagers that, in contrast to the majority of the local competition’s offerings, epitomize the elusive Brit-influenced combination of flavor, balance and restraint.

On its small and well-curated draft list can be found one or two excellent and like-minded Spanish guest brews as well as the occasional import. Though its modest approach makes Le Sec a criminally-unheralded feature of the rapidly-evolving Catalan beer scene, it remains an excellent destination by virtue of its consistent quality, and earns extra points as an authentic locals’ pub, in the Barcelona tradition.

What to expect

carrer de blai

The lively, edgy barrio of Poble-Sec is slightly off Barcelona’s main tourist grid. But for fans of tapas, a visit here is a must, as the neighborhood is home t0 Carrer de Blai, aka Pintxos Street. This bustling pedestrian way, popular with tourists and locals alike, features dozens of high-quality pintxos bars tightly packed within a few blocks.

Pintxos — typically consisting of small pieces of bread attached by toothpick to any toppings one can imagine — technically differ from the better-known tapas in that they don’t come free with drinks at the bar! The color and type of toothpick used for the typical Carrer de Blai pintxos should however indicate whether one will get away very cheaply — by paying a single euro for a “classic” — or be required to splurge for one of the more extravagant 2-euro house specialties.

BierCab

biercab

Opened in 2013 as Barcelona’s first serious international craft beer bar, BierCab was considered in some circles the world’s very best such watering hole just a year later. Founded by the pioneering visionary Belgian expat-entrepreneur Sven Bosch, of Naparbier fame, BierCab remains very much a local and international institution today, thanks to its surprisingly star-studded draft list, quirky and artsy interior design, and requisite excellent Catalan tapas menu. It’s also one of the few bars in Spain to serve a wide range of Belgian and American rarities, on tap and in bottle.

These days it’s just one of an ever-growing list of fine beer destinations in Barcelona, but much-revered by both locals and international travelers, for whom it is the indisputed go-to venue in Catalonia for those wishing to hob-nob with like-minded brew fanatics from all over the world.
