IREKS Malt

IREKS Malt

The pioneering Kulmbach master baker and brewer Johann Peter Ruckdeschel established his business in 1856. Nearly 170 years later, the company remains 100% family owned. In the proud tradition of brewing-related advances in Kulmbach, IREKS has been since its founding at the forefront of new malting technologies, introducing the world’s first first pneumatic Saladin floor malthouse in the 193os. In the later 20th-century IREKS developed the first germination-kiln-drying floor plant with a two-floor kiln system as well as the first gas-powered combined heat and power plant. Today IREKS is associated with malting operations in over 40 countries outside of Germany.

PLASSENBURG CASTLE

One of Germany’s most impressive castles, the Plassenburg was first mentioned in 1135 and has been a symbol of the city of Kulmbach ever since. As an earlier structure on the site was destroyed in the Margravian War of the 1550s, the current edifice dates to the 18th century. Having been the seat of various royal families over several centuries, today the Plassenburg is a museum, a venue for local cultural events, and one of the principal architectural landmarks in all of Franconia.

It's time to enter the big tent at Kulmbacher Bierwoche

KULMBACHER BIERWOCHE

Kulmbacher Bierwoche is the third-largest festival of its kind in Germany (after Munich’s Oktoberfest and Stuttgart’s Cannstatter Volksfest) and is by far the least touristy of the top three. During a raucous nine-day summer spree, thousands of dirndl and lederhosen-clad Franconians sing, stomp, clink steins, and down full or half liters of fest or weissbier to the accompaniment of Germany’s top party bands. Bierwoche offers a true initiation into Teutonic festival culture and is the highlight of any beer fan’s visit to Franconia.
