Itinerary, Walking & Bus Rides

This is one of our most active tours. Not only will we be walking and / or subway-ing all over Barcelona, but we’ll tour a monastery, a farm and a huge wine cellar in addition to the many breweries. If guests prefer not to (or are unable to) do the longer city walks, taxis (at own expense) are readily available in Barcelona and on our 1 night in Manresa. Metro rides on to tour venues in Barcelona will be included when we travel as a group.

We will have a private bus Tuesday-Friday taking us to our various countryside destinations, and most of our drives will be about an hour, give or take — though driving in Catalonia is unpredictable, so no promises. The bus may or may not have a toilet; if not, we will make emergency stops where necessary. If you are, or are traveling with, a person with a disability, please discuss with us in advance.

Food & Drink

Breakfast is included in all hotels and we strongly encourage you to take advantage of it. On each tour day there will be complimentary lunch and/or dinner as specified, and these meals will across the board be casual / mostly tapas, whether at breweries, bars, farms or restaurants. There are always vegetarian options, but vegan selections cannot be guaranteed ever. Note: the breakfast in Manresa takes place at a typical neighborhood café that provides bread / toasties and spreads rather than a full spread!

Complimentary set amounts (specified in advance each day) of beer, wine (when available) or soft drinks are offered with included lunches and dinners, but liquor and cocktails are at guests’ own expense. Varying amounts of beer / wine are included on brewery / winery tours, depending on venue. Please note that we are not an all-you-can-drink tour, and we encourage / expect moderation in alcohol consumption during tour hours. There will be plenty of time and easy access to restaurants for meals not included in the tour, and we offer info on options in each city. We also encourage you to pack small snacks for long tour days, and suggest bringing a refillable water bottle.

Hotels & Locations

Our 2 hotels in Barcelona are 4-Star — the U232 (Oct 22-23) arguably nicer but slightly outside the very center, Gran Via BCN (Oct 27) a bit more “boutique-y” and central. Guests will be near bars, restaurants and sites in both cases, and we provide handy printed/digital guides for extra-curricular eating & drinking during free time.

In the countryside, we have 1 night each in the village of Llacuna (in a remote, rustic but attractive “rural accommodation” that includes some apartments), the old city of Manresa (a unique apartment complex fashioned from historic buildings) and the medieval town of Vic (a very simple, typical Catalan roadside hotel). These 3 overnight options offer the perfect, authentic accompaniment to the “road-less-traveled” countryside portion of our itinerary, and guests should not expect American-style hotel accommodations on these 3 nights!

Weather & What to Bring

October in Catalonia is generally mild, and at its best can be considered mildly summery, even quite warm. We’ll check the forecast before traveling, but pretty much casual is the way to go, wherever we are. The most important item will be comfortable walking shoes as we’ll be on our feet a lot and will be treading upon a wide variety of landscapes in addition to walking the streets of Barcelona. We may need some light cool weather gear, at least in the evenings. Our meals will generally be quite casual, but guests may wish to have along some slightly nicer (than brewery t-shirts) for some of our restaurant dinners.
