Itinerary, Walking & Bus Rides

We will of course be on our feet daily touring breweries and distilleries, and our optional sightseeing walks in Glasgow and Edinburgh will involve multiple hours of city-walking, some of it hilly. We will walk to and from our official tour stops in Glasgow but guests can opt to take public transportation or taxis at their own expense. We will provide public transport to and from our official tour destinations in Edinburgh where needed.

We will have a private bus Saturday through Tuesday which will take us to hotels and most venues in Speyside, and to Edinburgh. While most drives will be an hour or less, several will take 2-3 hours — typical for The Highlands. The bus may or may not have a toilet; if not, toilet stops will be made as needed. If you are, or are traveling with, a person with a disability, please discuss with us in advance.

Food & Drink

Breakfast is included in all hotels and we strongly encourage you to take advantage of it. Lunch and / or dinner will be provided on tour days as specified; these are generally casual restaurant or elevated pub meals and the cuisine tends to be a mix of Scottish & International.

There will be plenty of time and easy access to restaurants for meals not included in the tour, and we offer info on options in each city. We also strongly encourage you to pack small snacks for long tour days (particularly the long-drive days), and to bring a refillable water bottle. All restaurant meals will include vegetarian options, but vegan selections cannot typically be guaranteed.

Complimentary set amounts (specified in advance each day) of beer, wine (when available) or soft drinks are offered with included meals, but whisky and cocktails at meals will be at guest’s own expense. Varying amounts of beer and whisky are included on brewery or distillery tours, depending on venue. In general: we are not an all-you-can-drink tour, and we encourage / expect moderation in alcohol consumption during tour hours.

Hotels & Locations

In all cities and towns we opt for mid-priced, clean and friendly 3-Star hotels.

The modest boutique hotel in Glasgow is relatively central but some guests may opt to reach it via public transport; in Pitlochry we will be centrally located; the hotel in Elgin is a few minutes’ walk from restaurants & bars, and the hotel in Edinburgh is very centrally-located.

Guests will be near bars and restaurants in all cases, and we provide digital guides for extra-curricular eating & drinking in each city. Our hotels in Glasgow and Edinburgh are modern / functional and the hotels in Pitlochry and Elgin are typical old-school UK. All except the Glasgow hotel offer restaurant-bar service.

Weather & What to Bring

June can be unpredictable in Scotland, so we strongly recommend checking the forecast last-minute before flying. But it will always be advisable to bring a jacket that’s usable in rainy weather, and / or pack an umbrella. The most important item will be comfortable walking shoes, as we’ll be on our feet a lot and will be visiting working breweries / distilleries with potentially wet and uneven floors.

Temperatures will vary but expect to need some cool weather gear, at least in the evenings. Dress can be casual throughout, with the possible exception of the final dinner at Café Royal, which offers a slightly more upscale atmosphere where nice shirts will be more appropriate than brewery t-shirts.

Midges: These very tiny mosquito-like swarming insects can be the bane of Highland existence in the summer, depending on immediate surroundings, recent rainfall, and which way the wind is blowing. We advise packing a small amount of bug spray — particularly handy for evenings spent outdoors.
